Consueto
THE LOCATION: Venice, Italy
THE PROJECT TYPE: Art Museum
THE PROJECT:
This project delves into aggregating modular spatial elements in search of unexpected and unique spatial conditions. Inspired by the urban fabric of Venice and the beauty found withing everyday scenes in Canaletto's paintings, the project aims to celebrate the beauty found in the simple and the overlooked moments of everyday life. Employing a modular design principle, it highlights how basic architectural elements can form the foundation for spatial experiences far more complex, exemplified by taking typical steel columns and beams to create a unique typology of an outdoor garden.
The project also highlights the importance of integration between all systems--whether spatial, structural, etc.--showcasing how technicality and design can work in harmony to create meaningful experiences. It bridges the gap between conceptual ambition and practical execution, emphasizing architecture's ability to bring very real change in society. Beyond its systems, the museum also establishes a connection with the larger urban fabric around it, reflecting the spirit of Venice. Similar to getting lost in the streets of Venice and stumbling upon hidden treasures, the project invites users to stumble across unexpected beauty in spatial conditions from the seemingly ordinary.
Consueto is designed as an art museum, specifically for Canaletto's works, located in Venice, Italy. The curator has requested four separate galleries, with each gallery dedicated to one aspect of Canaletto's process and final works--sketches, etchings and drawings, preparatory works, and major works, alongside a private courtyard for each gallery. The museum also serves as a community hub space, through programs like a trattoria, a ristorante, a portego to host community events, and a public campo.
